The TowerPower Europe-wide consortium has partnered to create a Continuous Structural Monitoring (CSM) system that will provide real-time structural analysis of the wind turbine tower structure through the application of a novel integration of NDT techniques and advanced electronic communication. This offers the real potential to drastically reduce the incidence of repairs/replacements, and associated downtime. Currently available Non-destructive Testing (NDT) techniques provide defect detection for components but do not offer continuous monitoring of the entire wind turbine structure. Though the SME-AGs are fully aware of the system requirements, they have neither the knowledge nor the research capacity to develop the system and have therefore engaged leading edge Research and Technology Development (RTD) partners to access the broad knowledge base required to develop the TowerPower system.
